FINAL CROSS SECTION
Crater of the vibro compacted method |
From the beginning of the construction phase,
it was found out that the vibro compacted method could not be carried out,
so the construction company turned to its own complementary studies. This
was due to the fact that, while the vibro compacted project has already
been put into practice, it was found out that the rate of fine-grained materials
exceeded by far 20% (it was on the order of 40%), while the optimum application
of the method requires a percentage from 10 to 20%. Consequently, the ground
could not be compressed using the simple method of condensation. Then, other
solutions were sought, such as the addition of coarse-grained material in
order to enrich the bottom material and perform excavations at larger depths.
Excavation Cross Section |
The contractor
carried out a new
study on the risk of liquefaction. The solution that was finally chosen provided for the typical cross section of the project by founding through a general excavation at 17.00 m and a local one at -20 m, 10 metres in length. This solution presents the features of a 'floating foundation' in most cross sections of the project. |
It also presents important construction advantages, since it is virtually a simplification of the conventional method of construction.
