EXCAVATIONS
- LANDFILLS AT THE LOCATION
OF THE ARTIFICIAL ISLAND
The new modified
cross section of the caissons that was proposed after the new geotechnical
studies resulted in an increase in the excavation of the sea bottom
from -16.00 m to -20.00 m. This led to an increase in the cubic metres
of excavation from 60,000 to 231,000 m^3. The new amount of excavations
was dealt with a LIMA 2400 oil tanker and the use of two 350-m^3 long
barges. |

For the above
reasons, there was a considerable increase in foundation ripraps; on
the other hand, there was also an increase in the absorption of the
riprap of more than 30% coming up to a rejection. The Ministry of Public
Works (supervising agency) accepted a percentage of absorption coming
up to a rejection on the order of 10%. |
This increased amount of ripraps was dealt with
amounts coming from existing Myconos quarries and with transport of large
amounts of riprap from other islands (Chios, Paros, Samos).
